Seint levels explained

Find your level, then your shades.

Seint sorts every skin tone into twelve levels, from Level I, the fairest, to Level XII, the deepest. Your level tells you which base, highlight and contour to start with. Here is how the levels work, the shades I start with at each one, and the easiest way to find yours.

What a level is

A level is simply how light or deep your skin is. Each level comes with a set of four colors that work together: a base that matches your skin, a lighter highlight, a contour for soft shadow, and a Lip + Cheek color. You put on the color first and the base last, and only where you want it, so your own skin and freckles still show.

The twelve levels at a glance

These are the shades I start with at each level, taken from Seint's own set for that level. Tap into the quiz to see four women of different ages at every level, so you can find a face like yours. For lips, my two favorites at almost every level are Black Cherry and Sandstone. See every shade in the Highlight, Contour and Lip + Cheek swatches, or see how Seint compares with Jones Road, Merit and Laura Geller.

How to find your level in two minutes

  1. Go to a window in the morning, with no makeup on. Bathroom bulbs make almost everyone look a little golden.
  2. Look at your jawline, not your cheeks. Cheeks run pinker than the rest of your face.
  3. Compare yourself to the faces in the quiz, and pick the level whose skin looks most like yours in that light.
  4. Between two? Choose the lighter one. Your base should disappear, not add color.

Still not sure? Send me a daylight selfie and I will tell you your level and your shades myself, for free. I look at every photo personally.

Common questions

Is Seint Highlight the foundation?

Yes. In Seint, the Highlight shade that matches your skin is your foundation, which I call your base. A second, lighter Highlight brightens the spots where light hits your face. It is the most confusing name in the whole line, and nearly everyone asks.

Can my level change?

Yes. Many women go a little deeper in summer and a little lighter in winter, and skin often shifts over the years. If your base suddenly looks off, it may be time to check your level again.

What if I am between two levels?

Choose the lighter one. Your base should disappear into your skin, and a shade that is a touch light blends in more easily than one that is a touch dark.

Can I mix shades from different levels?

Yes. The shades above are where I start, not rules. Plenty of women wear a base from one level and a highlight or contour from the next. That is exactly what a personal match is for.

Do I need a whole palette?

No. Every color is sold on its own at $16 a tin. A palette with a brush (the No. 4 Collection) is $127, and often less when Seint has it on sale, if you want everything at once.
